It's tough in this town of tiny theatres with tinier budgets. In Portland, the shows are varied, from obscure to big Broadway crowd-pleasers. What follows is merely a very small culling of my favorite design jobs from the over 200 I have done in Portland and the greater Northwest region. Many of us designers attempting to make a "living" in Portland do quite a bit of work in educational facilities such as high schools and colleges due to the fact there is so little work in Portland's "professional" theatres. Even though there are very few Lighting Designers in Portland (or at least LD's who have the resume that the handful of us have), there is not enough work to allow us all to make a living at it. Personally, I love designing, directing and teaching at high schools. It's very satisfying to feel like you're helping a student take an interest in something. I've taught, designed and/or directed at many schools including Lincoln High School, West Linn High School, Wilsonville High School, Milwaukie High School, Catlin Gabel School, Neah-Kah-Nie High School, and others.
